the Burger Stand, Lawrence, Kansas

bacon blue cheese burger and duck fat french fries at the burger stand

On our way across this great land mass we camped for a night near Lawrence, Kansas, home of the University of Kansas, and more importantly, (to us) the Burger Stand.  Those Kansas Jayhawks are lucky to have this place with great craft beers and a banging burger.  We had the Bacon Blue burger with granny smith apple chutney, and it blew us away.  Two things that might change your life:  their truffle oil fries, and duck fat fries.  We had both.  I stopped eating french fries about three years ago, but I’d eat these again right now if I could.   I washed each delicious bite down with a cold draught from the Free State Brewery (on special for $2).  Also impressive were the Vegetarian selections on their slim menu.  We tried the Quinoa dog, an exciting creation.  Often, I envy the simplicity of operations like this.  Only a handful of menu items, focused on one primary product (burgers).  Minimal prep work, less purchasing, fewer variables, less waste, etc.  But I would challenge that any place has as much fun as we do at the Cookroom, and I’m certain we have the greatest customers on the planet.  At the end of the week, that makes it all worthwhile.
